Scrapped Air India plane gets stuck underneath foot overbridge near Delhi airport
A video showing an Air India plane stuck beneath an overbridge in Delhi has gone viral on social media. Upon closer inspection, it gets clear that it is in fact a scrapped plane that was under transport before getting stuck. The incident took place outside IGI airport, on the Delhi-Gurgaon highway. Meanwhile, the airline has confirmed that there was no mishap. The plane was being transported by its new owner who bought it from Air India.
NEW DELHI: A video went viral on social media on Sunday morning, showing an Air India plane stuck underneath a foot overbridge on the Delhi-Gurugram highway outside the Delhi airport, leaving people perplexed as to how the plane got there.
However, the airline confirmed there was no mishap involved, with the plane being an old, scrapped aircraft which has been sold by Air India and was being transported by the plane’s owner.
“This is an old, scrapped aircraft which has already been sold off by us. There is no additional information as it involves the person to whom it has been sold off,” said an Air India spokesperson.
In the video, vehicles can be seen passing through one side of the highway while the other side appears to largely be blocked via the aircraft.
The nose of the aircraft and half of its body has also crossed underneath the foot overbridge before the top half gets stuck.
A Delhi airport official, when contacted, also said no flight or active aircraft had been involved in an incident.
“The aircraft certainly does not belong to the Delhi airport’s fleet and in the video, it is being transported without any wings. It appears to be a scrapped plane and the driver may have made a judgement of error while transporting it,” the official said.
In a similar incident in 2019, a truck carrying an abandoned India Post aircraft had got stuck under a bridge in West Bengal’s Durgapur, with the driver being unable to judge the height of the bridge correctly.
