Microsoft Says OneDrive Photos App Reached Too Many Windows 11 PCs by Mistake, Fix Coming

Microsoft has acknowledged that its new OneDrive Photos experience was rolled out to far more Windows 11 computers than intended, after users and IT administrators noticed the app appearing automatically on PCs.

Jeff Teper, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President responsible for Microsoft 365 collaborative apps and platforms, said the company was incubating a new photo experience in OneDrive and that it had gone more broadly than it should have in Windows.

Microsoft says it is working to correct the rollout. Teper also stressed that Windows Photos will continue to give users a choice between local and cloud-based photos and that using OneDrive will remain optional.

The OneDrive Photos experience began appearing on Windows 11 systems through the existing OneDrive sync client. It is separate from the standard Microsoft Photos application and is designed to provide a gallery-style interface for viewing and organising images.

Reports indicate that the rollout also reached enterprise computers even though the experience was intended primarily for consumer use. That unexpected deployment prompted concern among some system administrators managing business devices.

Another issue is removal. Because OneDrive Photos is currently tied to the main OneDrive installation rather than distributed as a conventional standalone Windows package, users do not have a straightforward way to uninstall only the photo experience without affecting OneDrive itself.

The application includes sections for galleries, albums, favourites, local PC images and other photo-management features. It can display local images even when a user is not signed into a Microsoft account.

The app has also attracted attention for an optional face-grouping feature. Reports say Microsoft has clarified that the feature is opt-in and applies to photos stored in OneDrive when enabled. Microsoft has also said photo data is not used to train facial AI models.

Microsoft has not provided a precise timetable for the corrective update. The company's acknowledgement, however, indicates that the unexpectedly broad deployment was not the intended rollout for the experimental experience.
