Kuwait reports strike on desalination plant as Gulf tensions rise
Kuwait has confirmed that a power and desalination plant was hit in an air strike on Friday, 3 April 2026, causing material damage to key components. Authorities said emergency teams were deployed immediately to contain the impact and maintain electricity and water supplies.
Kuwaiti authorities blamed Iran for the attack, though the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps denied responsibility and accused Israel of targeting desalination centers. The IRGC condemned the strike as âinhumanâ and warned that American bases and Israeli military sites remain potential targets.
Hours earlier, Kuwaitâs Al-Ahmadi oil refinery was also struck by drone attacks, sparking fires in several operational units. Emergency crews contained the situation, and environmental experts are monitoring air quality. The refinery, one of the largest in the Middle East, has now been targeted three times since the conflict began.
Regional observers note Kuwaitâs proximity to Iran, just 80 kilometers across the Gulf, makes it particularly vulnerable. Sirens and missile interceptions were reported across the country, with authorities warning of continued hostile attacks.
The Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Khaled, discussed defense cooperation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, including the deployment of a British air defense system to bolster protection against further strikes.
