Charging Station for Electric Vehicles in Katara

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide to encourage eco-friendly transportation. According to Eng Mohammed Al Sharshani, the Head of the EV Charging Stations Unit at Kahramaa, the quantity of fast EV charging stations in Qatar has now surpassed 200. In a recent interview with Qatar TV, he also mentioned the introduction of a mobile app by Kahramaa to assist drivers in locating EV charging stations throughout the country.

"There are two categories of EV charging stations. The AC EV charging stations, installed at residences, require five to seven hours for vehicle charging. The DC EV charging stations, meeting Kahramaa specifications, can charge a vehicle in 10 minutes to half an hour," mentioned Al Sharshani.

"To assist motorists in locating the nearest EV charging stations and familiarize them with the services provided, the mobile app 'Tarsheed Smart EV Charging' has been introduced," added Al Sharshani. He highlighted that Qatar ranks among the leading countries in terms of having the required infrastructure for electric vehicles.

"The country is increasing the number of EV charging stations, encouraging the use of electric vehicles," stated Al Sharshani.

Kahramaa, spearheading the expansion of the electric vehicle charging network through the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), has successfully launched over 200 swift chargers. The organization is committed to commissioning 300 units by the end of 2024 and has an ambitious target of reaching 600 units in 2025.

The Tarsheed Smart EV Charging app, designed for user convenience, facilitates the electric vehicle charging experience. Users can easily locate charging stations, check availability, initiate charging sessions, and monitor energy usage through their mobile devices.

This app aligns with the goal of promoting green transportation and improving the accessibility and convenience of electric vehicle charging.

Kahramaa is strategically placing fast charging stations at various locations, including government buildings, malls, hotels, Woqod stations, and public/private parking areas.

The installation of electric car charging stations is carried out in collaboration with the Steering Committee of the National Strategy for Charging Stations for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in Qatar. This committee, comprising representatives from various entities, aims to develop policies and facilitate infrastructure for electric vehicles, in line with the economic and environmental sustainability goals outlined in the Qatar National Vision 2030.
