Japan Prime Minister Vows to Build Disaster Resilient Country

Japanese PM Kishida Fumio

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has pledged that the government will learn lessons from the 2011 massive earthquake and nuclear accident to make the country more resilient to natural disasters.

Kishida attended a ceremony in Fukushima Prefecture to mark the 13th anniversary of the East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, according to Japan's broadcaster (NHK WORLD).

The Japanese prime minister said in a speech that the massive quake, tsunami and the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant changed the lives of many people in the prefecture.

He stressed that mid- to long-term responses are needed for reconstruction following a nuclear disaster.

He added that the government will continue leading efforts to decommission the plant in safe and steady ways.

An earthquake in 2011, with a magnitude of nine on the Richter scale, and a tsunami, killed more than 15,000 people, and caused a disaster at the Japanese Fukushima nuclear plant.
