How to Keep Your Pets Safe and Healthy This Summer

Qatar's summer season brings scorching temperatures and high humidity -  heat that makes us want to just shut ourselves indoors! Posing additional unique and uncomfortable challenges for pet owners, this extreme heat can be particularly dangerous for our furry friends.

To ensure the safety and well-being of your pets during the summer in Qatar, it's essential to take extra precautions. This article provides valuable tips on how to keep your pets safe, cool, and healthy in the summer season in Qatar.

1. Provide Ample Shade and Cool Spaces:

Qatar's summer heat can be relentless, making it crucial to provide your pets with shaded areas to escape the direct sunlight. Set up sheltered spaces in your backyard using umbrellas, canopies, or outdoor tents. If your pet spends time outdoors, ensure the shaded area is well-ventilated and protected from the heat. Consider bringing them indoors during the hottest parts of the day when the temperatures are at their peak.

2. Keep Your Home Cool:

Maintaining a cool indoor environment is essential for your pet's comfort and safety. Utilize air conditioning or fans to regulate the temperature indoors. Create a designated cool spot with comfortable bedding for your pets to rest. Ceramic tiles or cooling mats can provide additional relief from the heat. If you don't have air conditioning, ensure proper air circulation by opening windows and using fans strategically.

3. Keep Your Pet Hydrated:

Staying hydrated is vital for pets in Qatar's summer heat. Always provide fresh and cool water for your pets, checking and refilling their water bowls frequently. Consider using pet water fountains or automatic water dispensers to ensure a continuous supply of fresh water. If you're leaving your pet alone at home, place multiple water bowls in different areas to avoid dehydration.

4. Adjust Exercise Routines:

Exercise is important, but during the summer, it's crucial to adjust your pet's exercise routine to avoid overheating. Walk your dog during cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or evenings, when temperatures are relatively lower. Opt for shaded routes and avoid hot pavement, which can burn your pet's paws. Engage in low-impact activities and interactive indoor games to keep them mentally stimulated without exerting them in the heat.

5. Protect Your Pet's Paws:

The scorching surfaces in Qatar can cause severe burns to your pet's paws. Before heading outdoors, check the temperature of the ground/pavement by placing your hand on it for a few seconds. If it feels uncomfortably hot, it's best to avoid walks or use protective booties for your pet. Walking on grassy areas or using designated pet-friendly paths can also minimize the risk of burnt paws.

6. Keep a Note of the Nearest Veterinary Clinics:

With the scorching temperatures brought about during summer, your pets could require medical attention despite all the precautions being taken. It is important for you to keep a note of all the nearest vet services around the areas you and your pet habituate in order to avoid mishaps.
