The now-iconic image was taken in late 2007 as part of a charity calendar organized by FC Barcelona, UNICEF, and Catalan newspaper SPORT to raise money for children's programs.

Yamal's family, who lived in the Catalan city of Mataró, won a community raffle that allowed their infant son to be photographed with a Barcelona first-team player. By pure chance, they were paired with 20-year-old Lionel Messi.

Photographer Joan Monfort, who captured the images, later admitted nobody could have imagined how historic the photographs would become.

What began as an ordinary charity assignment has evolved into one of football's most remarkable coincidences.

Ahead of the World Cup final, Messi reflected on the famous photograph with genuine amazement.

"That photo is incredible. I took a picture with him when he was a baby... the fact that we're both playing in the World Cup now is crazy."

The Argentine captain also praised Spain's teenage sensation, describing Yamal as one of the best players in world football despite his young age.

"He's a tremendous player and already a global star," Messi said. "I wish him the best because his success is also Barcelona's success. But we'll do everything we can to stop him from becoming world champion this time."

Even Spain midfielder Mikel Merino admitted he initially believed the image had been created using artificial intelligence.

"The first time I saw it, I thought it was AI," Merino said. "It's unbelievable that two players of this level share a picture like that."
