Expo 2023 Doha and GORD Sign Agreement to Support Sustainably

The Organizing Committee of the International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha Qatar signed an agreement with the Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD), with an aim to provide the necessary needs to support Expo 2023's sustainable aspect.

The signing ceremony was held at the Expo Pavilion at the Doha International Book Fair in DEC Center, and in the presence of Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Exhibition and Director of the Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality Mr. Mohammed Ali Al Khoury and Chairman of GORD Dr. Yousef bin Mohammed Al Horr.

According to the agreement, GORD will supervise various aspects of planning and implementation of the event, supervising the installation and dismantling operations, as well as handling the legacy of Expo 2023 after its conclusion.

An integral part of GORD's role will be providing technical support to the working teams of the event and to make sure they comply with the requirements of the GSAS EcoLeaf certification for exhibitions and festivals.

GSAS EcoLeaf is a new certificate revealed by GORD which follows the global system for sustainability assessment to enhance sustainability and environmental performance during major events, and is aimed to reduce the carbon footprint of temporary facilities, while ensuring the safety and well-being of people and protecting the environment.

GORD will also contribute in creating a sustainability strategy and legacy plan for Expo 2023, and then provide a detailed plan for an effective implementation of the strategy. In addition to developing education in the field of sustainability, communication and participation plans, and preparing management system reports, the organization will also present reports on sustainability performance pre and post Expo 2023.

Through GORD, Expo 2023 Doha is aiming to fulfill its commitment of leaving a long-lasting positive impact on the environment and the future of sustainable event management.

Mr. Mohammed Ali Al Khoury said that sustainability has always been part of Expo 2023, and the organizing committee has been aiming to align its actions and initiatives with the vision of a greener future.

He noted that to achieve this goal, cooperation with the most prominent experts in the field of sustainability, such as GORD, is a pivotal step, especially with the organization's experience and commitment to environmental sustainability, which reflects positively on the event and allows to provide a unique sustainable experience.

He added that the committee is looking forward to organize an event that will have an impact of the efforts made to address the effects of climate change, and sets an example to follow and reference.

Dr. Yousef bin Mohammed Al Horr said that the organization of Expo 2023 Doha is a strategic step that allows focusing on the crucial role of sustainability and green initiatives, which also aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030.

He stressed that GORD feels pride in participating in supporting the organizers of Expo 2023 and help implement the sustainability requirements that had been set by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH).

He pointed out that this cooperation makes this event an opportunity to address climate challenges, and to also enable and inspire future organizations and events to follow the best practices that will be applied in Expo 2023 Doha.

International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha is an international horticultural exhibition held in the Middle East and North Africa region. The event, under the slogan "Green Desert, Better Environment", aims to inspire and introduce people to innovative solutions aimed at reducing desertification and limiting its effects.

Expo 2023 Doha will be held from October 2, 2023 to March 28, 2024, during the mild winter season and on a 170 hectares area.

The Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD) is a non-profit organization and the forefront in the sustainability field in the Middle East and North Africa region.

It is based in Qatar Science and Technology Park, which is leading the transformation of societies, industries and the built environment by influencing businesses, fostering innovation, and developing capabilities to enable sustainable, low-carbon growth for current and future generations.
