The process of producing these bottles generates 30% less greenhouse gases (GHG)

Doha, Qatar, 29 October – As the sustainability efforts in the country accelerate thanks to the rising consumer awareness and key government initiatives, Aquafina customers will now be able to enjoy 100% recycled plastic water bottles. The bottles have been made using recycled, reprocessed and repurposed plastic emitting over 30% less greenhouse gases (GHG) compared to fossil-fuel, making them more echo-friendly.

These efforts cement the brand’s commitment to drive a circular economy and decrease waste created during packaging. Aquafina, PepsiCo’s global mineral water brand, is the first beverage brand to produce locally manufactured 100% recycled plastic bottles, excluding the cap and label, in Qatar and the entire GCC region.

In a recently announced Join the Ripple Effect campaign, Aquafina encourages people to commit to small things that can have a big impact in the future, with the 100% recycled plastic water bottles providing an easy step for consumers looking to move towards a more sustainable lifestyle. The new Aquafina bottles will launch in the 330ml and 500ml sizes, allowing its consumers to stay hydrated with sustainable packaging.

Aamer Sheikh, PepsiCo Middle East CEO, said “This is a milestone moment for us as we mark the launch of locally produced 100% recycled plastic bottles for the first time ever in the GCC. Our bottler partner in Qatar, Ali Bin Ali, has been instrumental in bringing this initiative to life, working with us to establish best practice and adapt the new packaging to local market needs. We’re using the power of our brands to inspire people to make more positive choices for themselves and the planet. Aquafina has led sustainability efforts in the region for PepsiCo – raising consumer awareness, innovating with products, and we think it has a pivotal role to play in building a world where packaging never becomes waste.”

In a joint effort with the policy makers, local bottlers and key waste management stakeholders in Qatar, steps are being taken towards advancing the recycling infrastructure and creating better consumer awareness around the concept of recycling, making sure the least amount of waste ends up in the landfill.

Mr. Nabeel Ali Bin Ali, Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President, ABA Holding said, “The launch of the 100% recycled plastic bottle is a testament to the team’s hard work and vision that has recognized the State of Qatar to be the first market in the GCC to rollout the new and more sustainable packaging. At Ali Bin Ali Holding, we are committed to contributing to sustainable development and achieving Vision 2030 of Qatar.”

Last year, Aquafina drove extraordinary progress towards advancing sustainability in the GCC region. It offered ground breaking technology and innovative packaging that has had a great impact on how beverages are bought and consumed. PepsiCo has announced its goals to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by the year 2040, cut plastic serving by 50% across its entire food and beverage chain by 2030, as part of its PepsiCo Positive (pep+) strategy launched last year in 2021. PepsiCo is expected to have globally implemented 100% rPET in 22 markets, with more than 87% of its packaging currently being recyclable, compostable, biodegradable or reusable.
