Silver is a lustrous, white metal with a symbol ‘Ag’. It is one of the highly used metals for making jewellery and precious ornaments. But do you know that not the purest form of silver is used for making jewellery and other fashionable assets. Fine silver (i.e. 99.9% pure) is too soft to manufacture any entities. So, as an alternate, sterling silver was used.

Sterling silver is an alloy with 92.5% silver and 7.5% of other metals (including copper, nickel, zinc, germanium and platinum). Other metals are only added to enhance the strength and ductility of silver.

Today jewellery market is flooded with sterling silver chains, pendants, necklace and other products with unique designs and patterns. But buying such products requires equal amount of efforts to make them glittering always. With few simple hacks, you can make them shine for a lifetime. Have a glimpse on how you can keep your silver jewellery winking always.


Use of Soap and Water: Tarnish is a common problem in old sterling silver jewellery. To get rid of this problem, use the blend of soap and water to wash it and make it glitter. Take warm water and add mild, ammonia- and phosphate-free dishwashing soap in it. Wash your jewellery with that mixture to remove tarnish. Wearing silver while bathing will overcome this problem. But note down that prefer to wear silver only when you are bathing with a soap. Avoid wearing it when you are using highly perfumed bath product.

Olive Oil and Lemon Juice: Shining of any jewellery is highly important while wearing any silver product. Make a heterogeneous mixture of half cup lemon juice and one teaspoon olive oil. Use a soft cloth to polish the silver jewellery. Remember, not to dip your jewellery in the mixture. Instead, use the cloth to apply over the silver. The sparkling shine will be back.

White Vinegar and Baking Soda: Above steps can be implemented in case you are facing limited tarnish. But for heavy tarnish, you need a strong remedy. Make a solution of half cup white vinegar and two teaspoon baking soda. Dip the silver accessory with heavy tarnish for 2-3 hours. After that, take out the accessory, rinse it and dry it with a soft cloth.


If there is heavy corrosive layer, then it’s good to reach a professional jeweller to handle your accessories. Incorrect handling of very old, brittle or heavy corrosive valuables may destroy them.


Additional Points to Heed:

- Never wear sterling silver jewellery while working with detergents as it will cause result in the discoloration of the silver

- Never allow your silver jewellery to come in contact with items containing sulfur.

- Always remember to put an anti-tarnish paper strip in your jewellery bag.

If maintenance is done properly, you can retail your jewellery for lifetime without compromising with their shine. So it’s up to you; either invest again and again on brand new fashion assets or maintain the existing ones and save your pocket from getting empty.
