Chelsea v Liverpool UEFA Super Cup to be marked with competition first
Chelsea’s UEFA Super Cup clash with Liverpool will see a female officiate the contest for the very first time in history, it has been announced.

As reported in the above tweet, Stephanie Frappart, who took charge of the Women’s World Cup final between USA and Holland, will referee this year’s UEFA Super Cup.

It’s the first time in history that a major UEFA contest will be officiated by a female, which is a huge step forward for equality in the game – and long overdue, it must be said.

Chelsea will go head-to-head with Liverpool in Istanbul with the UEFA Super Cup on offer, an opportunity at silverware which we have thrown away twice in the last seven years.

Who will be referee when the game comes around, male or female, ought to be irrelevant, and it will, in time.

For now, though, we can celebrate this huge achievement for Frappart and the potential positive movement which will likely follow.
