UN General Assembly Sixth Committee Gives Observer Status for the Global Dryland Alliance

The Sixth Committee (Legal) of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution by consensus presented by the State of Qatar, granting an observer status for the Global Dryland Alliance (GDA), which is based in Doha.

The resolution was adopted by 49 states, the largest number of approvals given to a draft resolution submitted to the Sixth Committee, which reflects the success of the Qatari diplomacy and its status in the United Nations.

The Committee decided to invite the Global Dryland Alliance to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer.

Founded in Doha in 2017, the Global Dryland Alliance (GDA) is a collaborative undertaking of members and partners to make dryland countries food secure. It aims at sharing knowledge and best practices; assisting in the development of capabilities to prevent food crises; and by providing mutual assistance in times of extraordinary need such as natural or manmade disasters and calamities.
