Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive H E Akbar Al Baker said Sunday that the airline wanted to buy a stake in Germany's Lufthansa.

Speaking on the sidelines of a visit by Lower Saxony's Premier Stephan Weil to Doha, Al Baker said if there was a possibility of investing in Lufthansa, he would be interested in doing so. He added that he could imagine a partnership at least as a first step.

Germany is a very important country in terms of aviation services as well as for developing tourism, Al Baker said.

A further possibility would be a codeshare agreement, an arrangement whereby an operator sells seats on another operator's flights using their own designator and flight number, or a marketing cooperation.

Qatar Airways' current membership in the Oneworld alliance could be a hurdle, Al Baker said. That could change, he added, noting that he had often said he would leave Oneworld.

Lufthansa is part of the Star Alliance group of airlines.
