Only outdoor activities will be allowed for this year’s National Sports Day

All sporting activities and events this year will be held only outdoors and no permission will be given for any NSD events to be held indoors, in view of the current Covid-19 pandemic situation.

The Organising Committee of the National Sports Day (NSD) has announced that all activities and events scheduled for this year's NSD will be held outdoors only and no such activities will be held in closed areas.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Organizing Committee in the Ministry of Culture and Sports, announced along with the co-ordination with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) – the above mentioned conditions for holding the National Sport Day activities this year.

So basically all sporting activities and events this year will be held only outdoors and no permission will be given for any NSD events to be held indoors, in view of the current Covid-19 pandemic situation.

Qatar’s National Sport day is a national holiday held annually on the second Tuesday in February, with the aim of promoting a healthy lifestyle nationwide.

As is past years, the NSD is celebrated on the second Tuesday in February which this year falls on 9th February 2021.

Qatar is one of the few countries in the world to dedicate a day for sports, and both citizens and residents alike celebrate this special day enthusiastically embracing special physical activities.

And as a nation, Qatar is well-known for crossing all leaps and bounds in promoting art, culture, and a healthy lifestyle around the world. NSD is celebrated in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

The NSD is celebrated by virtually every organization and society in Qatar. This is a day when most of the government ministries and private sector organizations organize public sporting events and encourage their employees to take part in the activities.

The National Sports Day is celebrated marking of the decree issued in December 2011 with the idea to dedicate the second Tuesday of February every year to sports.

The first National Sport Day was held in 2012 and was designated for sporting endeavors by the citizens of Qatar. The day’s main purpose is to promote sports and to educate the local population on ways to reduce health risks associated with an inactive lifestyle, such as coronary heart disease and diabetes.

Many government ministries and private sector companies organize hundreds of activities and sport day events for employees and the general public ranging from football to basketball, tennis to taekwondo, cycling to swimming, with countless free sporting sessions and social competitions, available to all.

Apart from the sporting events that take place during the Qatar Sports Day, there are a number of free sporting sessions are organized for the people of all age groups.

The news of not holding any indoor events this year may dampen the spirits of  those all geared up to celebrate another day of sports and enthusiasm as the National Sports Day (NSD) edges closer but it is a necessary step taken by the Organizing Committee in the Ministry of Culture and Sports in conjunction with MoPH.

Not only sporting sessions, but there are a number of indoor social events too that are held as part of the NSD activities which will NOT be held this year in a wise move taken the authorities in view of the current Covid-19 pandemic situation.

However, Qatar will continue to play a significant role in promoting a healthy community at both physical and psychological levels and the Qatar National Sports Day 2021 is an integral part of it aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle for citizens and residents alike.
