Diabetes Walkathon tomorrow at Oxygen Park

Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), a member of Qatar Foundation, is hosting its annual Diabetes Walkathon to mark World Diabetes Day 2019, which will take place tomorrow (Friday) from 2pm to 5pm, at Oxygen Park in Education City.

The event is under the theme of ‘Protect your Family’ to raise awareness that reducing the risk of diabetes starts at home and also  to raise awareness of diabetes and promote the importance of regular exercise to help prevent type 2 diabetes and manage all type of diabetes. There will be educational booths offering tips on healthy living, risk screening, how to prevent diabetes complications and many fun filled sport activities for everyone to enjoy, and all attendees will receive a cap and  T-shirt for participating in the event.

Dr Abdulla Al Hamaq, executive director of QDA, said: “We are very pleased with the great participations of our health partners; Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, Primary Health Care Corporation, National Diabetes Strategy, Ministry of Public Health, Qatar Metabolic Institute, Tobacco Control Center at Hamad Medical Corporation and Cardiac Rehabilitation Department  at Heart Hospital.” 

Dr Al Hamaq said: “In addition to raising awareness about type 1 and type 2 diabetes, we focus on pre-diabetes. prediabetes is a category of higher than normal blood glucose, but below the threshold for diagnosing diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of develop type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is our duty in the health field to target this group so that they can avoid diabetes. And the research studies from different parts of the world, including Finland, USA, China and India, have established the that lifestyle modification with physical activity and/or healthy diet can delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.”
