No gatherings: Oman bans group events until further notice

Oman on Wednesday prohibited all group events, postponed students’ return to universities and advised citizens and residents against foreign travel, in a tightening of measures against the coronavirus, state media said.

The ban on gatherings include international conferences, sports events and exhibitions, state news agency ONA said, citing a decision by the Gulf state’s coronavirus emergency committee. Oman closed its land borders ten days ago.

A statement issued online by Oman TV said, ”The Supreme Committee is studying the observed increase in the number of infections and those in intensive care rooms and hospital wards in the Sultanate, and issued a number of decisions, including prohibiting the holding of group events and postponing the opening of direct education in universities and colleges.”

Additionally, the committee has decided to postpone the expansion of blended education of government schools and suspended the holding of any international events, activities and conferences in the Sultanate.

”The Supreme Committee in charge to deal with COVID-19 decided to postpone the opening of direct education in universities and colleges, postponing the expansion of blended education for the academic stages of government schools, suspending the holding of international events, activities and conferences in the Sultanate, and suspending the holding of local events and activities of a public nature, including sports activities and exhibitions,” the statement added.
