Coronavirus latest: Global coronavirus cases exceed 700,000

The total number of COVID-19 infections worldwide has exceeded 700,000 since China first reported it was treating dozens of virus patients in December.

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, 721,584 people from 177 countries and regions have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus as of early Monday.

The United States leads all other countries in the number of confirmed cases of infection, accounting for almost 20 percent of the total, followed by Italy with 13.5 percent and China with 11 percent.

The global death toll from the virus has surpassed 33,000 with at least one-third reported from Italy.

The top three countries with the highest number of fatalities are Italy, Spain and China, respectively.
