Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) issued a public advisory in the light of sand and dust storms forecast across most of the country by the Qatar Meteorology Department, urging residents to take basic health and safety precautions.

The sand and dust storms can cause adverse health conditions like sinus allergies and respiratory infections, especially in those with chronic diseases, said Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, Medical Director of HMC. He asked those who suffer from diabetes, kidney diseases and hypertension to consult their doctor if an infection occurs due to storm. Allergy patients may use antihistamines before the onset of allergy symptoms.

Al Maslamani advised people not to venture outside, particularly during  high winds or low visibility. Nose and mouth should be covered with a mask or damp cloth to reduce inhaling dust particles. USing protective gear for eyes such as airtight goggles is ideal. When irritation feels in eyes, rinse with water instead of rubbing to prevent infections.

Al Maslamani asked to take extra care of infants and young children, as well as the elderly,  as they have a high risk of contracting a respiratory infection. Those with a history of asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or other respiratory conditions are particularly vulnerable to airborne particles in the storms. People with heart disease, pregnant women, and those who work outdoors, are also at an increased risk for respiratory conditions.

He informed that Emergency Departments of HMC are fully prepared to meet any contingency and additional staff is on standby. He asked all who experience mild symptoms such as watering eyes, cough or wheezing to approach nearest primary health center. If anyone feels severe breathing problem should go to the Emergency Department, he added.
