Fasting in the month of Ramadan is obligatory for all the Muslims who are of age and who are healthy. Muslims also fast in different months to gain rewards and to become pious. Fasting is not an easy task, you need to restrain from food, sins, and other prohibited tasks.

There are some activities that are allowed for Muslims to perform but are prohibited during a fast (like eating, having intercourse with spouse etc.). Thereby Muslims shall be equipped with lists of things that are prohibited during fasting.

They shall clear away there queries related to fasting so that they can keep a Perfect fast. So today we will be dealing with the most frequently asked question which is can a person donate blood while he or she is fasting?

Well, to be clear, blood donation is like cupping. Cupping is a medical process where blood is removed from the surface of the body. Cupping or blood donation causes loss of blood from the body. Muslim scholars have a different opinion on the matter of blood donation and cupping during fasting.

Blood Donation Breaks the Fast: There is one group of scholars that allow Muslims to donate blood while there is other that says that donating blood is haram during fast. The Scholars like Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, Shaikh bin Baz, Shaikh Uthaimeen, Shaikh Saleh Fauzan and Shaikh Jibreen are of the view that cupping and blood donation during fasting is haram.

They prohibit cupping and blood donation during fasting as it is an action that is prohibited by Holy Prophet PBUH himself. Rafi bin Khadi narrated that: The Prophet said: “The cupper and the one cupped have broken the fast.” – Jami` at-Tirmidhi 774

Blood Donation doesn’t break the Fast: The other group of scholars that include Shaikh Nasiruddin Al Albani, Sahabah Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), Imam Shafi and Imam Malik, are of the view that blood donation or cupping does not break the fast.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) was cupped while he was fasting. – Sahih al-Bukhari 1939

Comparing Two Hadiths: Shaikh Nasiruddin Al Albani, also calls upon that the earlier hadith prohibiting cupping gets nullified as the Prophet PBUH himself got cupped.

However, the scholars who believe that cupping and blood donation is haram say that the first hadith is an order by Prophet PBUH while second is an action of Holy Prophet PBUH, in such a case order has more value than action.

My Opinion: One can donate blood and get blood in the case to save a life but it shall break the fast that shall be kept latter. Indeed, saving a life of a human being is more important than keeping your fast.

Some scholars believe that such an act during a fast in categorized as Makrooh and not Haram while all believe that loss of small amount of blood in an injury or for a medical test does not breaks the fast.
