Paboritong Ulam ng mga Pinoy: Pinakbet

Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, you will surely fall in love with the taste of Pinakbet, a well-known Pinoy dish that is both healthy and affordable. Rich and poor Filipino families indulge with the unique and enticing taste of Pinakbet and its cooking and preparation are simple and easy. With all its ingredients that are mainly vegetable, this particular dish is a package of nutrition and good taste. Below is the recipe of this wonderful and delectable Pinoy delicacy.



  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 piece chopped onion 
  • 3 cloves minced garlic 
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 250 ml water
  • 1/8 teaspoon grounded pepper
  • 1/4 kilo pork belly (cut in small strips)
  • 3 tablespoons shrimp paste
  • 1 small squash (peeled and cubed)
  • 6 young okras (cut in halved and ends removed)
  • 3 pieces chopped tomatoes
  • 10 pieced string beans (cut into around 5 cm lengths) 
  • 1 bittermelon (seeded and sliced into small pieces)
  • 2 regular sized eggplants (cubed)

Cooking instruction:

  1. Preheat the cooking oil in the pan under a medium heat
  2. Saute the onion and garlic until slightly brown then add the pork. 
  3. Cook the pork while mixing it until it is slightly brown.
  4. Then, add the shrimp paste and mix the existing ingredients in the cooking pan.
  5. After around 3 minutes, add the tomatoes and pressed them against the pan to release its juice then continue mixing them with the pork and other ingredients inside the pan.
  6. Add 100 ml water and bring to a boil, then simmer for around 15 minutes or until the pork is already tender.
  7. Add the remaining water and bring to a boil.
  8. Add the squash and cook for around 3 minutes before adding the bittermelon, string beans, and okra.
  9. Cook for few minutes until the vegetables are tender enough.
  10. Add the seasoning; the salt and pepper
  11. Simmer for another 2 minutes, taste and serve hot.
