Most controversial moments in football

Football is more than a game, it’s filled with emotions when it comes to the players or the fans. As former Scottish player and manager Bill Shankly said, ‘Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.’ So when a star player leaves his club for their rival club or when a decision by referee has gone wrong in a match, it becomes very controversial and sometimes it can be talked about for years. 


Here are a few controversial moments in football history-

Diego Maradona ‘Hand of God’:

In the 1986 World Cup, Argentina faced England in the Quarter Finals. Early in the second half, the ball came inside the England box and goalkeeper Peter Shilton and Argentina attacker Diego Maradona went up for the ball.

Shilton was 8-inch taller in height but somehow Maradona won the ball in the air and scored the goal. In reality, he actually used his hand to score but somehow it skipped the referee’s eyes. This goal is still one of the biggest controversial goals in World Cup history. Argentina went on to win the game as well as the World Cup that year.
