Vicks is one of the most popular over-the-counter decongestants and has been used for more than a hundred years. Lately, there has been a lot of buzz about the surprising ways you can use this ointment.

Here are some of the top unconventional uses of Vicks VapoRub:



The antibacterial and antiseptic properties of Thymol, one of Vicks’ compounds, enables you to use this ointment in the treatment of toe fungus. All you have to do is rub your toes with it to eliminate the problematic fungus.


Vicks contains petroleum jelly, so it’ll help you soften your dry lips. What’s more, the menthol in its content will plump your lips naturally. However, do not use it if you have cracked lips to prevent your lips from irritating.


If you are suffering from a sunburn, you can rub a little bit of VapoRub on it, and it will help the stinging stop.

You might be surprised, but Vicks can help relieve the itch and sting when it comes to sunburns. Put your Vicks in the fridge for a while, and then apply a thick layer of the cold ointment for relief.

Note – do not use Vicks on broken or blistered skin, and on children.


Putting some Vicks into your affected ear using a cotton ball, and letting it stay for a few hours can help relieve your earache. Thanks to its antiseptic effects, the ointment can also reduce pain from ear infections. However, you should know that it won’t clear up the infection.
