Plant-Based Diet Tips for Every Vegan

Veganism and vegetarianism are increasingly a popular lifestyle choice. But following a plant-based diet can also seem like a challenge, especially when it comes to getting all the nutrition you need.

So, if you have recently started a plant-based diet, or are thinking of making the switch, then check out our vegan hacks for a delicious, easy, and healthy meat-free lifestyle.

Be prepared

Preparation is key to eating the plant-based way, as it ensures you get all the vitamins and minerals you need, whether at home or out and about. Consider meal prepping – a few hours cooking on a Sunday afternoon can give you all the core vegan meals you need for the rest of the week. And make the most of your freezer, so even if you are tired or late home after work, you will always have a delicious and nutritious plant-based meal to hand.

And stock up on healthy plant-based snacks such as oat bars, fruit and nut and seed mixes, so you can curb those hunger pangs between meals.

Listen to your body

Be mindful of how your body feels and what it needs through your plant-based diet to keep in good health. Also listen to what any cravings may be telling you as this could stop you reaching for unhealthy, sugar, fat, or salt-heavy snacks.

Mild dehydration can be misinterpreted as hunger so make sure you drink plenty of fresh water – the ideal is to aim for eight glasses a day. Slow-release carbs such as oats or wholegrains and ensure you have some plant-based protein with every meal to help balance your sugar levels and keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Keep informed about vegan nutrition

A common misconception about a vegan diet is that you can’t get all the vitamins and minerals you need for good health. But the reverse is actually true, as most plant-based ingredients are nutrient rich, but the key is knowing where and how to get all your essential vitamins and minerals in your daily vegan diet.

For good health, make sure you are eating food that is rich in the important nutrients, such as vitamin D, vitamin C and the vitamin B complex. And when it comes to iron from plant-based foods, you need to make sure you are maximising on its absorption.

If you are concerned that you are not getting all the nutrients you need as you adjust to a new vegan diet, or you simply want to safeguard your general nutrition while on a plant-based diet, then adding in daily multivitamin tablets can also be a good idea.

Be adventurous with your food!

And finally, be adventurous with your food! Creating flavoursome and varied vegan food doesn’t have to be a chore and there’s a vast range of ingredients and spices available that are both delicious and packed full of nutrients. And falling in love with the dishes and snacks you make while following a plant-based diet will make it an easy - and healthy - lifestyle choice.
