Qatar Airways on Wednesday added yet another new destination in its expanding network, announcing direct daily flights to Cardiff, the capital of Wales. The Doha-based airline is the first Gulf carrier to service Cardiff, which would be its fifth gateway in the UK.

The service will commence on May 1, next year, one among the 26 new routes being launched by the airline through 2018. Cardiff is one of the most compelling tourist destinations in the UK. Southwest England will also be more easily connected to Doha with this service.

Akbar Al Baker, group chief executive of Qatar Airways has noted in a statement that the direct service will help the travelers who currently fly to and from London using ground transport between London and Cardiff.

Carwyn Jones, the first minister of Wales, said the service will be huge boost for Wales as it will give new economic, leisure and travel opportunities for the people and businesses of Wales. He added that it will also bring Wales closer to leading global markets such as India, China, Singapore and Australasia through Hamad International Airport.

Qatar Airways currently operate services to London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.
