Threat of nuclear weapons is great in Middle East than any other region and creating a nuclear-free zone is the basic step to make progress on nuclear disarmament, said Qatar addressing the annual conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), currently being held in Vienna.

H.E. Sheikh Ali bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, also demanded the agency to compel Israel to implement relevant international resolutions and join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in his address. Ambassador Ali pointed out that the decision of 1995 Review and Extension Conference of the Parties to NPT has not yet implemented even after 25 years.

Ambassador also noted the growing threat of cyber crimes on the safety and security of nuclear power plants. He asked IAEA to boost its efforts to strengthen cyber security.

Sheikh Ali also explained Qatar’s position regarding the peaceful use of nuclear energy and said that the country is developing institutions to oversee peaceful implementations of nuclear power, especially in the fields of foodstuffs, agriculture, human health and environment. He thanked IAEA for its cooperation in executing these projects.
