Dr Aicha Hind Rifai, a leading psychiatrist and assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), discussed the ways to treat depression and address the psychological problem, in the presence of the audience at the ‘Ask the Expert’ series.

Dr Aicha, during the programme, explained the symptoms of depression, and ways that it can be effectively treated or managed with medications, therapy and lifestyle changes, as The Peninsula reports.

Dr Rifai emphasised that people suffering from depression or any form of mental illness should not hesitate from seeking help.

She added that depression is an illness that can be treated and it is not something to be ashamed of.

Pointing out some of the causes of the psychological problem, Dr Rifai stated that depression may appear at home or at work, physical illness, loss, social isolation, relationship problems, bereavement, or hormonal changes caused by a recent pregnancy, and other factors.

She noted that one of the primary causes of depression relates to complex interaction of many factors, which can be emotional, physical or cognitive. The quicker depression is addressed the easier it is to treat.
